1️⃣ Origins: What sparked your journey into AI/ML?

“My journey into AI began during undergrad, working in a research lab on facial recognition using MATLAB. That was my first glimpse into classifiers, datasets, and the magic of black-box intelligence. I didn’t fully understand it at the time—but I was hooked.”

“During my Master’s at UCLA, I dove deep into machine learning. That’s when it all clicked—neural networks, optimization, real-world impact.”

Key Insight: Exposure + curiosity = the first spark.

2️⃣ Legacy Project: What’s one initiative that defined your impact?

“My thesis on sign language recognition. I built a model that translates hand gestures into words using computer vision and sequence modeling. It wasn’t just published—it made communication more accessible for the hearing-impaired.”

This project became the foundation of Shruti’s broader mission: building inclusive AI for real-world needs.

3️⃣ Mentor Wisdom: What’s your top advice for women entering AI?

“Start before you feel ready. AI is vast, and there’s space for builders, designers, and ethicists alike. Don’t be intimidated—your voice and skills matter. Surround yourself with uplifting mentors, and keep building.”

4️⃣ Future Vision: How can AI better empower women in tech globally?

“By making education, tools, and opportunities universally accessible—especially in underserved regions. But this only works if women are involved in building AI, from design to deployment. That’s how we fight bias and foster inclusion.”

Inclusion isn’t an outcome—it’s a design choice.

5️⃣ Hidden Superpower: What underrated skill drives success in AI?

“Curiosity paired with grit. AI changes fast. You need the mindset to experiment, fail, learn, and try again. It’s not about knowing everything—it’s about showing up relentlessly.”
